The muddy trail that leads to their concrete one-storey house in the outskirts of Prishtina becomes almost unpassable during rain. However, that hasn't been the only obstacle Maliqe and Ismajl have dealt with on their quest for education. The siblings were once children in a street situation, facing numerous challenges and uncertainties. Yet, with the dedicated support of Terre des hommes - Kosovo, they have found hope and a path towards a brighter future.
Enrolled in special classes just last year, Maliqe and Ismajl have been studying diligently ever since, their dreams for their future finally within reach.
As 12-year old Maliqe reflects on their journey on the International Day of Education, she emphasizes the remarkable progress she has made. With each passing day, her reading and writing skills improve, filling her with a sense of pride and confidence. Maliqe's dream of a future abundant with opportunities is no longer a distant fantasy but a tangible goal worth pursuing.
“With every day, I am improving writing and reading. I dream for a future with plenty opportunities for me’’, she says.
For Ismajl (11), the educational journey has not only been about academics but also about forming meaningful connections. Attending school has provided him with the opportunity to make new friends, an experience he finds both exciting and transformative. No longer isolated by the challenges of their past, Ismajl's social circle has expanded, enriching his life with shared laughter, support, and companionship.
‘’Now that I am going to school I am making new friends. It is quite different experience‘’, he emphasizes.
Their mother, Imrane, expresses her gratitude to Terre des hommes and its Day Care Center for the invaluable impact they've had on her family's life. Through the center's unwavering dedication, their heartfelt wish for a better future has become a reality.
No longer do Maliqe and Ismajl face the dangers posed by the streets; instead, they are empowered to pursue their dreams in a safe and nurturing environment. Imrane's hopes for her children's future have grown immeasurably, fueling her optimism and belief in their potential.
