Trauma-Informed Care Training of Trainers Empowers Professionals Across Six Countries

Participants

Terre des hommes Kosovo (TdhK) is implementing the regional project "Multidisciplinary approach to preventing and responding to violence in schools – CARING 2.0" (March 2025 – February 2027), as part of a consortium and in partnership with organizations operating in six countries — Hungary, Romania, Greece, Croatia, Bulgaria, and Kosovo. The project is financially supported by the European Commission, within the Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values (CERV) program.

As part of this regional initiative, a three-day Trauma-Informed Care Training of Trainers (ToT) took place in Prishtina from October 1 to 3, 2025, bringing together professionals from across Europe to strengthen their understanding and capacity to apply trauma-informed practices in their work with children and families.

Purpose and Objectives

The ToT aimed to:

  • Strengthen participants’ understanding of trauma and its impact on children, families, and professionals.
  • Equip participants with practical tools and methodologies to integrate trauma-informed approaches in their institutions.
  • Build the capacity of trainers to replicate the training within their own organizations and communities, ensuring sustainable dissemination of knowledge.

A Multi-disciplinary and Cross-country Effort

The event brought together participants from Tdh Hungary, Tdh Romania, Tdh Greece, Hrabri Telefon (Brave Phone) Croatia, SAPI and Association Roditeli Bulgaria, and Tdh Kosovo, along with partner institutions representing education, social services, health, justice, and civil society sectors.

Special guests from Tdh Ukraine and Tdh Albania also joined, fostering cross-country exchange and collaboration among professionals dedicated to creating safer and more supportive environments for children.

Training Content and Methodology

The comprehensive training curriculum was designed by Suzana Lutolli, a trauma expert engaged by Terre des hommes, and covered the following key topics:

  • Understanding trauma and its effects on child development
  • Principles of trauma-informed care across different sectors
  • Recognizing and responding to trauma in educational, healthcare, social, and justice contexts
  • Building trauma-sensitive environments in schools and child protection systems
  • Multi-disciplinary collaboration for effective trauma-responsive care
  • Self-care and resilience for professionals supporting children with traumatic experiences

Resources and Training Materials

To support participants in replicating the training, the ToT provided an extensive set of resources, including:

  • A facilitator’s guide and integrated participant manual with detailed session plans
  • PowerPoint presentations, case studies, and role-play scenarios reflecting real-life situations across sectors
  • Practical exercises and group activities fostering teamwork and reflection
  • Pre- and post-training evaluation tools to assess learning outcomes
  • A designed webinar series agenda to ensure continued learning and support after the ToT

Towards Trauma-Informed Systems of Care

This initiative marks another important milestone in strengthening the capacity of professionals across Europe to recognize, prevent, and respond to trauma. By fostering trauma-sensitive practices, the CARING 2.0 Project contributes to building systems where every child feels safe, supported, and understood.
